Why not become a referee?
Picking up the whistle and taking charge of a rugby match can be one of the most satisfying sporting experiences on the planet. There are many reasons why you may decide to become a referee, they can include:
- It’s a way to remain active in the game when you stop playing.
- It’s a way to give something back to the sport.
- Perhaps you have incurred an injury that stops you from playing.
- You may be able to achieve higher honours as a referee than player.
- Rugby is one of the greatest team sports.
What do I need to do?
There is a process to follow before taking charge of your first game, they are:
- Complete the application form and submit proof of payment of the R250 fee. The bank details are on the application form.
- There are several courses that need to be completed first:
- Go to world.rugby/training-and-education
- Register on the website (it’s free) and click on the tab “Passport Site”
- Complete Rugby Ready
- Introduction to rugby refereeing
- Laws of the game.
- As you successfully complete each course the system will generate an electronic certificate which you can download and save.
- Send copies of these certificates to:
- Boksmart – these courses take place several times during the year. Contact the Referees’ office on any of the above email addresses for upcoming dates.
- World Rugby Level 1 – after completing the World Rugby online courses, WP Referees conduct additional courses, and these also need to be completed. Contact the office for upcoming dates.
- Go to world.rugby/training-and-education
Once you are an active referee plying your trade within Western Province and have gained experience, there may be opportunities to move through the ranks to higher honours.
Typically you would need to move upwards within the provincial structures, completing the additional training courses and achieving acceptable fitness and exam results along with on-field performance reviews.
The diagram below indicates the pathway to national duties:
How does the grading system work?
There are detailed criteria on how a referee progresses through the system from Beginner to Division 1. Click on the button above for an explanation on how this process works, but it includes three elements: fitness test, examination result and on-field assessment. Each division has requirements that need to be achieved before promotion can be considered.

The Boksmart National Rugby Safety Programme is a joint venture between SA Rugby and the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Players’ Fund aimed at reducing the number of catastrophic injuries in the game.
Boksmart aims to provide coaches, referees, players and administrators with the knowledge and skills to ensure best practices are incorporated into all aspects of contact rugby.
Referees and coaches are specifically targeted because they are the key influencers of the game controlling players the game and the players.
All coaches and referees must certify every two years. No coach or referee may enter the playing enclosure without a valid Boksmart accreditation.
WP Referees hosts a number of accreditation courses every year, contact the office for current dates.
